Just Some Radios...

 Dazed and Confused by Radios

Some radio collectors take the hobby to the next level.

Aaron Zevy has done more than just collect radios. He has written books on his collection and the adventures he's had pursuing them. He's even written a children's book on radio styles and colors!

He also maintains one of the best websites dedicated to his radio collecting. And he frequently posts radio videos on social media.

Over the years, he has gifted and donated a vast number of his radios to friends, family, associates, and colleagues, some of which are on permenant loan.

The Radio Collector

He has 1000s or rare, unique, and desirable radios in his collection. His radios are a variety of early, mid, and late 20th century beauties. Almost all are restored and in working order.

Here are some of his most memorable examples:

1948 Madison 940 (New Old Stock) -This radio is original and unrestored and came with its original box (not pictured). This rare molded molded in pink still had its original cord wound from the factory probably never plugged in. All the parts are in exceptional as-new condition. No cracks, chips, or major defects or blemishes.

1955 Olympic Model 441 - in original factory molded shamrock green color. This radio was restored to excellent working codition. Has very unusual medium green color. Most green radios from this period are sage green, forest green, or grey green.

1954 Emerson Model 778 - This is a uniquely beautiful radio in a collectible red color .

Why do people collect things?

What makes people want to collect certain things but not others?

Collectors, in general, get fulfillment from the repeated acquisition of a certain object or experience. The pursuit of this object or experience is something with which the collector associates deeper meaning. A collection is amassed in the repetitive search and fulfillment of this latent need.

A collector of vintage radios is unique. But like collectors of art, music, and antiquities, they also share some common traits.

Art and Design Aficionados

It is not difficult to see art in the design, colors, and functionality of radios. Like cars, radios are working objects of art in form and function. And the designs speak of days long gone.

Radio provides visual escape to another period, place, and time. A time and place that perhaps offers solace and intrigue to the collector.

Warm Comforting Sounds

Some radio collectors enjoy listening to vintage radios because it takes them back to another time. Some radio collectors do not do not listen to their radios at all, preferring to only display them.

There's something about broadcast radio that hits different. It's live and personal. It is often local especially AM. There's a spontaneity about it. You never know what might happen next. It's not always recorded, so your you need to be present in the moment or miss it forever.
