Nothing beats high voltages and heat in generating a warm organic sound that seems to fill the room. By comparison, solid state or digital seems to just approximate this effect. It's for this reason that the highest quality audio equipment and amplifiers used by musicians today are still based heavily on vacuum tubes. Not surprisingly, rewards come with risks. Old vacuum tube technology until the sixties operate at high voltage and high heat compared to solid state electronics prevalent from sixties onward. Furthermore, these old designs are 'hot-grounded' to the AC line as opposed to the third prong "cold" ground. Vacuum tubes are an obsolete technology and very few manufacturers are still making them today. However, old stock vacuum tubes are still readily available for not much money approximately $5-$20 per tube. Contrary to widespread belief, they are not prone to failure. Very rarely will you ever need to change a tube because it has blown out or because it has shaken too hard. Most of these old radios still have the original tubes that came with the radio when it left the factory and they still work fine. Most of the radios made in the forties were wired point-to-point which meant inconsistencies during manufacture. Never put your hands inside one of these old radios when it's turned on or plugged in. Never leave these radios turned on for an extended period of time unattended. Do not operate these devices on a metal table. Do not operate these radios on a wet surface. If the surface underneath one of these radios gets wet, pull out the plug before turning it off and dry everything off before attempting to turn it back on. For best performance, do not operate this radio near a modern electronic device; computer, microwave, home security, fluorescent light, etc. You will hear a constant humming or whining. All vacuum tubes take some time to warm up, no more than 30 sec to a minute at the most. The radio listed in this auction is restored only, not refurbished. With the right care and proper use, it should provide a (another!) lifetime of use. Great for décor, a conversation piece, etc. They getting more collectible and increasing in value too. Not sure of the model number or exact year of manufacture. I've never heard of Brandes. This must be a really rare one! This radio demonstrates some of the best quality manufacturing standards inside and out! For example, I noticed cloth covered wires were carefully routed between connections. The dial glass is attached to cabinet with metal brackets wrapped in rubber that was still spongy. Picks up AM stations clearly and loudly up and down the dial without external antenna attachment. I wasn't able to pick up any shortwave stations but it's not often that I do. I did not try to attach an external antenna. Maybe the third knob is for tone. Excellent art deco design! Front gold mesh grill solid and classy. Quintessential art deco. Brown bakelite cabinet is still in mirror-like glossy condition. There's not a single crack anywhere in the cabinet. The knobs are original matching brown bakelite securely attached. The gold metal grill is in great condition. This radio is over 60 years old! All the dial numbering and lettering is crisp and clear. The dial is glass plate in pristine condition. No missing numbering, dots or dashes, or anything. No smudges or yellowing. I looked hard to find a single flaw or blemish on this radio and there are none! Even the leatherette back panel is in excellent condition. The tuning and volume dials work fine. The unit powers on and off with a definite click. All out of spec capacitors have been replaced with modern equivalents so this radio has another 50+ years or more of playing time! The tubes are working fine. All out-of-spec resistors have been replaced with modern correct value and voltage equivalents. The replacement power cord and plug are brand new replacement with no cracks, or splits or electrical tape repair. No exposed wiring. The radio has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected. All paper and wax capacitors have been replaced with modern equivalents so this radio has another 50+ years or more of playing time! The clock works and keep accurate time for a mechanical analog design. The alarm works. The buzzer works. The clock and alarm set function work. There is a appliance timer function in back. I'll bet it works if the alarm function works, but I cannot think of a good reason to use it nowadays. Pretty superfluous function even back in the fifties. The tubes are working fine. Picks up AM stations clearly and loudly up and down the dial without need of external antenna attachment. Cabinet is in very good condition in original ivory paint. Not repainted. There are no cracks, chips, splits, or missing material anywhere on the cabinet. There a few light surface scratchesdents, and dings throughout but not too bad. This radio is over 50 years old! The dial bulb is awesome test tube-like bulb glass with long filament inside. It is very artisan bulb looking. It is also designed with a tuning dial light which works fine too. Bulb switch works fine. Yes, the chicken wire screen is original. Painted in white (ivory) with what looks like house latex. Not a happy choice for a screen material. It is one of the earlier models. Later, Mitchell started using a piece of opaque plastic. Better than this screen notion but tended to crack. These bed lamps were designed to hang off your bed headboard and function as a reading light and radio. What a joke. The little brackets used to mount this thing on a headboard are missing. All the dial numbers are crisp and clear. No missing ink, smudges, or rub-off on dial lettering. The tuning dial knob has a small melted section. Original knobs domed ivory volume knobs is nice. The tuning dial works fine and smooth no slipping. The back has one missing slat. There anoth back slat that has been broken then glued back on. The back grill cloth is original and looks good. The power cable is in good condition and securely attached. All paper and wax capacitors have been replaced with modern equivalents so this radio has another 50+ years or more of playing time! Cabinet is in good condition with no cracks, splits, or seams, abrasions, major scratches or missing pieces. Structurally, the cabinet is solid with no seams no separated joints or split corners. The top has seen better days but it is structurally one piece, intact, not peeling, or bubbling but has varnish checking and flaking. The sides look shiny and deep and rich wood grain. It's hard for me to describe the wood grain but it looks reddish mahogany. The clock works smoothly and cleanly with no pervasive hum or buzzing. The on/of/alarm switch is working fine. Two of the three little brown knobs on the clock are still present and securely attached. The little white clock set center knob is still present and securely attached. The front bezel is original painted yellow wood with gold painted speaker slats. The clock and radio dials are a beautiful turquoise color. The gold metal surrounds are nicely aged with natural yellow patina. The dial face transparent bezels are clear not yellowed no cracks or hazing. Picks up AM stations clearly and loudly up and down the dial without external antenna attachment. I was able to pick up all the AM stations loudly and clearly. Excellent construction and design! Hefty wooden curved chunks on all sides with nice grained mirror finish. Few dings, scratches and dents from over the decades from normal wear and tear but not abuse. Front grill cloth is original intact no tears, fraying or moth bites. Original varnish is still glossy condition. The side corner joints are developing stress cracks but the cabinet is still one-piece, solid and intact. This cabinet is one of the chunkiest wood designs I've seen. Curvaceous and hefty but not heavy, it looks like it's been carved out of a solid block of wood. No missing chunks or pieces. No separated joints or repairs. The knobs are brown plastic or Bakelite with gold metal inserts securely attached. The glass dial is in great condition but like manu old Philcos the numbering transfer is flaking off in places. This radio is over 60 years old! All the dial numbering and lettering is crisp and clear. The tuning and volume dials work fine. The unit powers on and off with a definitive click. There are no warranties on the items.

OPERATION: These old tube radios are better sounding than solid state audio devices, in my opinion. No missing ink, smudges, or rub-off on dial lettering. The grill logo and applique are in perfect condition. Looks regal and classy by intent. A little cheesy if you ask me. The kitschy-est of kitsch! The tuning dial works fine. The clear dial bezel has a 1-2" crack that has been stabilized with glue. The power cable is securely attached. All paper and wax capacitors have been replaced with modern equivalents so this radio has another 50+ years or more of playing time! The tubes are working fine. All out-of-spec resistors have been replaced with modern correct value and voltage equivalents. There is no loud or pervasive hum. There is no loud or pervasive static between stations. The set has been aligned according to factory specifications. The power cord and plug are good original working condition with no cracks, or splits. No exposed wiring. The radio has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected. All wiring has been thoroughly checked for possible bridging and weak solder connection. Comes from non-smoking, mature, clean professional environment no pets. When this radio was new, tailfins were all the rage!

OPERATION: These old tube radios are better sounding than solid state audio devices, in my opinion. Besides, everyone already has an fancy stereo, iPod or MP3 player!

X
SOLD! - Sept 12, 2015 - BEAUTIFUL SEA GREEN Retro Jetsons 1956 Motorola 56CS Tube AM Clock Radio Totally Restored!

BEAUTIFUL SEA GREEN Retro Jetsons 1956 Motorola 56CS Tube AM Clock Radio Totally Restored!

DIMENSIONS: Approximately 12" x 5" x 6" (l x w x h)

COLOR: Sea Green, like a pastel green, or pistachio green

YOUTUBE VIDEO here

MP3: Plays MP3 for $99 more, includes cable. Besides, everyone already has an fancy stereo, iPod or MP3 player!

SHIPPING: I make best effort to package all my items carefully using industry standard packing materials; styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, foam sleeves, or a combination of any or all these (depending on the item).
